Overview

If you’re in Rosemead and craving authentic Japanese comfort food, Mogu Mogu Onigiri Shop is a destination worth discovering. Nestled conveniently at 3365 Walnut Grove Ave, this cozy spot specializes in onigiri—Japan’s beloved rice balls—crafted with care and inventive flavors that elevate a simple snack into a memorable meal.

The heart of Mogu Mogu’s menu is its variety of onigiri, each filled with high-quality ingredients and balanced seasoning. Highlights include the Eggplant Onigiri grilled with a homemade sweet miso and shiso leaf, which offers a subtle crunch and umami depth, and the classic Salmon Onigiri wrapped delicately with shiso to cut through the richness. For those who appreciate hearty meals, the Donburi bowls stand out—particularly the Karaage Japanese Fried Chicken paired with a perfectly cooked egg bowl. These dishes showcase Mogu Mogu’s skill in marrying fresh flavors with comforting textures.

The space itself feels intimate and inviting, designed for a quick bite or a relaxed meal, catering well to individuals, small groups, and even busy lunch crowds. Many patrons praise not only the food but also the attentive and friendly staff who create a welcoming atmosphere. This makes the dining experience both satisfying and personable.

One consistent theme of the reviews is the freshness and authenticity embedded in each bite. The rice is described as perfectly cooked, with just the right texture to hold fillings like slow-cooked pork belly, grilled spam, or savory karaage chicken. The inclusion of vegetarian options such as the Ama Miso and Yaki Nasu Miso onigiris reflects an understanding of diverse tastes and dietary preferences.

Location-wise, finding parking can be a minor challenge due to limited spaces, and the exit route requires some patience during busy periods. Despite these small logistical hurdles, customers keep returning for the quality and flavor that Mogu Mogu delivers.

In essence, Mogu Mogu Onigiri Shop is a gem for onigiri enthusiasts and those new to Japanese rice balls alike. Whether you seek a quick, tasty snack or a fulfilling meal with traditional elements thoughtfully prepared, this Rosemead spot provides an authentic taste experience that lingers long after the last bite.

Was here Saturday afternoon after reading all the nice reviews. I ordered the 3 pc large combo with pork belly, spam and egg, and fried chicken and my wife had the 2 pc combo with eggplant and ama miso. Both combos also came with 2 pc kaarage and a soda. The rice was perfectly cooked, slightly al dente just the way we liked. The slow cooked pork belly was tender and the spicy miso flavor was not spicy but tasty. The spam egg was slightly sweet with just the right amount of sauce. The kaarage as previous Yelpers have mentioned is really juicy inside and yet crunchy outside. My wife also enjoyed the grilled ama miso, offered a slight crunch in every bite. The eggplant was slightly undercooked but still very good.

They had pretty short hours focused around lunch time, so I had trouble making it here before they closed for the day. I was finally able to stop by during the week after a doctor's appointment maybe 30 min before their 3 pm closing time and pick several different onigiris that were not yet sold out for the day. We went big and ordered several to go: * 3x Karaage wrapped in Dashi Shiitake Gohan (Japanese Fried Chicken in Shiitake Dashi Rice) - $4.50 each * 2x Spam Onigiri (Grilled Spam with Tare Sauce) - $3.25 each *1x Tuna Mayo (Cooked Light Tuna mixed with Japanese Mayo) - $3.75 * 5x Grilled Salmon with Shiso Leaf - $4.25 each * 1x Mentaiko Mayo with Tamago (Mentaiko mixed with Japanese Mayo with Japanese Egg Omelette) - $4.60 * 3x Buta Kakuni (Slow Braised Pork Belly) - $4.50 each I personally liked the karaage, spam, salmon, and pork belly. BF enjoyed the karaage and salmon the most. They have more on the menu that we wanted to try next time, so hopefully we make it early enough before they sell out! There's parking in the plaza, but it can be a little hard finding a spot since there's not too many spots. The other challenge is getting out, as there's only one entrance to get in and out of off Walnut Grove Ave, so if you need to head north, good luck getting out and beating opposing traffic.

I have been here numerous times to pick up for lunch. It's the only Onigiri shop that's close by to me. I usually get the large combo. It's comes with your choice of 3 onigiris, 2pc Karaage and drink. I highly trying Buta Kakuni w/ spicy miso & Mentaiko w/ Tamago. Those are my two favorites!

I ordered online for pickup and it was ready when I got there. They weren't busy at all and very empty inside. I ordered 3 onigiri: salmon, eggplant, and tuna mayo. I liked the size of the onigiri and how packed they are with filling. There was a little too much mayo with the tuna and the rice felt a little too mushy to me. But the taste overall was great. I really liked the eggplant one, perfectly cooked and paired well with the dipping sauces.

My friend tried and liked this place, so I gave it a try too. They have a slightly different take on onigiri from what I'm used to. Instead of having a small bit of the filling encapsulated in the very center of the rice, Mogu Mogu cuts the center of the rice triangle and stuffs it with the filling, like a hotdog in a hotdog bun. The salmon onigiri doesn't have any filling as the salmon is integrated into the rice itself as a mixture,so every bite has salmon. The spam/spam and egg "onigiris" are basically like a spam musubi. The mentaiko one was super flavorful and is my favorite of the 3 meat-based flavors I tried. The karaage one was really good too and I like the crunchy/soft/moist texture of it. The braised pork belly was a bit dry to me and I would have liked more sauce, but the raw chives had a nice spicy flavor contrast with the savory/sweet pork. I would come back again for sure, but do note they have limited hours of operation (as of 2024/07/14), it took 5-10 minutes to prepare 6 onigiris, and the free parking lot only has 1 entrance/exit. There are 4-5 dining tables available inside for sit-down.
